Suicide is not any more a crime in Pakistan

Suicide is not any more a crime in Pakistan. The Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill 2022, which abolishes the penalty to attempt suicide, passed by President Dr Arif Alvi on Friday.

According to the statement by the Presidency, Section 325 of the Pakistan Penal Code 1860. Which deals with the punishment of suicide attempts, will abolish.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) introduced the legislation (JUI) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam opposes the bill.

Suicide or attempted suicide is an offense under Section 325 of the Pakistan Penal Code. And is punishable by one year imprisonment, fine or both.

According to public health experts, about 75 percent of Pakistanis suffer from various mental health problems.

According to Health Services Academy (HSA) Vice-Chancellor Professor Shehzad Ali Khan, majority of Pakistanis are either depressed or suffering from mental stress. Suicide is not any more a crime in Pakistan.

Arif Alvi also approves the Foreign Investment (Promotion and Protection) Amendment Bill, 2022. Which amends Section I of the Foreign Investment (Promotion and Protection) Act, 2022.

The purpose of the amendment was to clarify the scope and applicability of the Foreign Investment (Promotion and Protection) Act, 2022.

President Alvi approved both the bills under Article 75 of the Constitution.
