A university in Chenzhou, China has invented a device that has caused a stir in Chinese social media circles.

The contraption with ‘silicone lips’ has pressure sensors and actuators and can simulate a real kiss, the China-run Global Times reported.

The report states that the device can also mimic the pressure, movement and temperature of the user’s lips.

The ‘kissing device’ aims to let long-distance couples share virtual intimate moments.

Social media was flooded with mixed reactions to the device.

Some users described it as funny, while others described it as ‘vulgar and scary’ and expressed concerns that minors could buy and use it.

After pairing with a partner on the app, they can start a video call and transmit a copy of their kisses to each other.

This is where the inspiration for the kissing device came from. In 2016, the Imagineering Institute in Malaysia launched a similar device called ‘Kissinger’. Which took the form of a touch-sensitive silicon pad, CNN reported.

The device also allows users to pair up with strangers and exchange kisses, the Global Times reports.
