Mason Greenwood leaves Manchester United in loan

Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United on transfer deadline day after an attempted rape charge against the footballer was dropped earlier this year.

Manchester United say the move will allow the player to “build his career” away from Old Trafford after he was acquitted of assault and attempted rape charges.

Greenwood will travel to Spain to play for Madrid-based club Getafe.

Manchester United said in a statement: “Mason Greenwood has signed for La Liga side Getafe CF on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance.

This move enables Greenwood to begin rebuilding his career away from Manchester United.

“The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”

Last month, United announced that Greenwood would not play for them again.

In a statement, the club said: “All involved, including Mason, recognize the difficulties in resuming their careers at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would appropriate for him to stay away from Old Trafford. And we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

The forward charged in October 2022 with attempted rape, assault and battery, and coercive behavior.

He initially arrested in January that year. In February 2023 the Crown Prosecution Service said it had a duty to “discontinue the case” after “key witnesses return and new material comes to light”.

These developments meant there was “no longer any realistic prospect of a conviction”. And the CPS decided to close the prosecution and drop the charges against Greenwood.

After United announced the results of their internal investigation, Greenwood said: “I fully accept that I have made mistakes. And I take responsibility for my part.”

He has always denied any criminal charges. Greenwood, who has won one England cap, scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for United, with his last appearance coming on 22 January 2022 against West Ham.

He has a contract at Old Trafford until June 2025, with an option to extend for a further year.
