IT and Telecom Minister Syed Aminul Haq reveals reporters that the issue has two implications, political and technical. We will discuss the technical side in the first meeting. Including determining whether it is bugging or a cyber security breach.

The minister says that the details will clarify after the technical experts of the security establishment give input on the matter.

Cabinet Division Notifies Committee on September 30 to monitor and review investigations into cyber security breach in Prime Minister’s Office. They will review existing cyber security protocols and suggest immediate steps to develop foolproof security system in 7 days deadline.

Apart from five ministers, the committee includes heads of Inter-Services Intelligence, Intelligence Bureau, technical experts of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Federal Investigation Agency and Secretary of National Telecommunication and Information Technology Security Board (NTISB).

The NTISB is housed within the Cabinet Division and its functions include formulating and promulgating policy to ensure IT security in the armed forces and all civil departments, as well as the provision of national security-related IT services in the country from time to time.

Observers believe that the creation of a special committee in the presence of NTISB was unnecessary.

PPP’s climate change minister Sherry Rehman and JUI(F)’s communications minister Asad Mehmood are also part of the committee. Apparently as representatives of coalition partners, as their ministries have no connection to the leaks.
