Fire in northwest China’s Xinjiang

Fire in northwest China’s Xinjiang residential building ten people killed and nine injured, state media reported. Second major fire in the country this week, leaving a total of 48 dead.

The blaze broke out in a high-rise building on Thursday night, state news agency Xinhua said, at about 7:50 pm (1150 GMT).

“Ten people died despite emergency treatment,” Xinhua stated.

“The injuries sustained by nine others are not life-threatening,” it added, saying an investigation into the fire started.

Fire in northwest China’s Xinjiang flames extent upward from the 15th floor to the 17th floor, with smoke billowing up to the 21st floor, according to several state media reports. The blaze took around three hours to extinguish.

Deadly fires are common in China, due to weak safety standards and corruption between officials tasked with enforcing them.

This week, 38 people were killed and two were injured in a fire at a factory in central China’s Anyang city.
