CM Elahi assures Lahore High Court that he’ll not dissolve the assembly after reinstatement
On Friday, the Lahore High Court reinstated Parvez Elahi as Punjab Chief Minister. After the Pakistan Muslim League- Quaid leader provided an undertaking that he’ll not dissolve the assembly after reinstatement.
The dissolved cabinet was restored by the court. After Punjab Governor Baligh- ur- Rehman de-notified Elahi as the chief minister.
The court asked Elahi to give an undertaking assuring the five-member bench that he’d not dissolve the Punjab Assembly” if he’s reinstated.”
The LHC took up Elahi’s solicitation filed before in the day against his de-notification from the post of Chief Minister by the Punjab governor.
Elahi, in his solicitation, has requested that the governor’s announcement to denotify him as the CM be declared illegal.
According to the details available, Moonis Elahi inked the undertaking on behalf of his father. Meanwhile, the advocate of the Governor told the court that if Elahi takes the vote of confidence. He said that the governor is ready to take the announcement back. The court didn’t make it mandatory for the chief minister to take a vote of confidence.
A five-member bench — headed by Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh and including judges Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal, Tariq Saleem Sheikh, Asim Hafeez, and Muzamil Akhtar Shabir — heard the case.
The court took two breaks — of 10 minutes and an hour. The Court asked Elahi’s counsel Barrister Ali Zafar to consult his client. Following the assurance of not dissolving from the PML- Q leader, the court reinstated him as the chief minister.
The LHC also issued notices to all the parties in the case and summoned them on January 11. The court suspended the governor’s order till the coming date. The court didn’t make it mandatory for the chief minister to take a vote of confidence.
Still, it noted that the court’s order” will not avert the petitioner from taking a vote of confidence on his own accord”.
