‘Ms Marvel’ criticized for misrepresenting independence movement

The latest episode of Ms Marvel’s web series on the role of the first Muslim Pakistani superhero girl, directed by three other filmmakers, including the Oscar-winning Pakistani filmmaker, criticizes the misrepresentation of the struggle for the establishment of Pakistan.

The 5th episode of Ms Marvel was released on July 8, which featured several highlights of the character of Fawad Khan i.e. Hassan.

He is portrayed in the web series as an active member of the Tehreek-e-Azadi, although he is portrayed in a Muslim role. However, while raising awareness among the people about the independence movement, he has been seen highlighting the Ideology of Gandhi’s instead of the Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan.

Fawad Khan i.e. Hassan character in the movie is propagating two-nation ideology of Ghandi instead of Quaid-e-Azam’s ideology.

Many fans are outraged and criticized the web series team and especially director Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy on misrepresenting the Pakistan establishment movement.

Most of the people criticized the director and accused her of distorting the history of the independence movement.

Some people wrote that although they are not narrow-minded and nationalist, they want the facts to be presented accurately and Indians are ahead in telling their history in a better way.

Fans wrote that no one can deny the services of Quaid-e-Azam in Tehreek-e-Azadi and establishment of Pakistan but there is no mention of him in Ms Marvel as all. Director choose to name Ghandi for freedom fighting efforts.

Some wrote that Pakistan’s history was apparently distorted to please more people in India, which is reprehensible.

The team was also criticized for including controversial dialogue on the establishment of Pakistan in the 4th episode before the recent episode of Ms Marvel.

In the 4th episode, Samina Ahmed is shown as the grandmother of Kamala Khan, the main character of the web series, and she was seen telling the story of her ancestors and there was a controversy over her dialogues.

In a scene from the 4th episode, Samina Ahmed tells her granddaughter Kamala Khan i.e. Ms Marvel, that she has a Pakistani passport but her roots are connected to India and there is a bloody and painful border between the two.

She further tells Kamala Khan that the people there are identifying themselves according to the thinking of some old British who had fled the region.

She was also criticized by the people and accused of distorting Pakistani facts and history.

Earlier, people had criticized the web series for showing the English accent of Kamala Khan’s parents as the accent of Indians instead of Pakistanis.

The web series has aired 5 episodes so far and its 6th and final episode will be released soon.

The story of the web series revolves around a Pakistani Muslim girl named Kamala Khan who is a girl with special abilities.

The web series features many Pakistani and Indian actors including Mehwish Hayat, Fawad Khan, Samina Ahmed, Nimra Bucha and Indian actor Farhan Akhtar.

Kamala Khan’s main role is played by Iman Walani, a Canadian girl of Pakistani origin.
