Pakistani film ‘Joyland’ selected for Oscar

The Pakistani committee of the most prestigious award of the film world, ‘Oscar’, has selected the film ‘Joyland’. The movie releases in November this year, for the foreign film category for the Oscar.

“Joyland” will compete with films from more than 100 countries of the world. Including India, Great Britain, China, Germany, Canada, France and Israel, in the foreign category film at the Oscars.

Every year the Pakistani committee selects one film release in Pakistan for the ‘foreign’ category. Till now no Pakistani film shortlists for the award in this category.

The Oscars will announce the award nominations on December 21, 2022. After which the Academy will announce the shortlist films on January 24. The 95th Academy Awards ceremony will be in Los Angeles on March 12, 2023.

In August this year, Pakistan’s Oscar committee invites filmmakers to send films for the award. Now the committee selects filmmaker Saeem Sadiq’s film ‘Joyland’ for the award.

In a statement issue by the committee, it is confirm that ‘Joyland’ is unanimously nominates for the Oscar. It is hope that the film will be successful in bringing the award to Pakistan.

Producers Sarmad Khost and Apoorva Gurucharan also express their happiness over the selection of the film for the Oscars by the committee.

The selection of ‘Joyland’ announces at a time when the team of the film recently announce that it will release in theaters on November 18 this year.

Saeem Sadiq’s film also presented at the Cannes Film Festival in France in May this year.

Joyland already wins the ‘Cannes: Queer Palm’ award. This award is exclusively give to film based on the stories of gay or bisexual people.

‘Joyland’ is the first Pakistani film to win the ‘Queer Palm’ award.

Apart from this, the film is also presents in other international festivals including the ‘Toronto International Film Festival’. The film also wins other international awards.

The story of the movie revolves around a young man and a transgender dancer who fall in love while working in a dance club.

The film is highly appreciated for the untouchable subject of the story. Its team awarded the highest award for making a film on a subject which is considered as vice in a society like Pakistan.
