An international team of scientists has produced the first brain map showing every neuron and connection in an adult brain. The structure of the brain is one of the most puzzling and complex puzzles in the universe.
The FlyWire Consortium created this wiring diagram and showed each of the 139,255 neurons and the 50 million connections between them in the brain of a fruit fly.
While the human brain has about 1 million times more neurons than a fly, this brings us closer to understanding our brains, according to researchers.
Dr. Gregory Jeffries, co-leader of the project at the University of Cambridge, says the brain wiring diagram is the first step towards understanding everything we are interested in, such as how we control our movements, answer the telephone, etc., or know a friend.
