Sweden Govt condemns ‘Islamophobic’ Quran burning. The Swedish government denounced the burning of a Quran outside of Stockholm’s main mosque earlier this week on Sunday as an “Islamophobic” act, following a request for action from a global Islamic organization.
The foreign ministry issued a statement saying, “The Swedish Government fully understands that the Islamophobic acts committed by individuals at demonstrations in Sweden can be offensive to Muslims.
The statement continued, “We strongly condemn these acts, which in no way represent the opinions of the Swedish government.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Which has its headquarters in Saudi Arabia, called for collective action to stop Quran burnings in the future, prompting the condemnation.
The 57-member group gathered at its Jeddah headquarters to discuss Wednesday’s incident. In which Salwan Momika, a 37-year-old Iraqi citizen living in Sweden, set several Quranic pages on fire.
In a statement issued following the “extraordinary” meeting, the OIC urged member states to “take unified and collective measures to prevent the recurrence of incidents of desecration of copies of the” Quran.
“Burning the Koran [Quran] or any other holy text is a provocative act that offends and shows disrespect. The Swedish foreign ministry declared that racism, xenophobia, and related intolerance have no place in Sweden or Europe.
The ministry also stated that Sweden’s “right to freedom of assembly, expression, and demonstration” guaranteed by the constitution.
Sweden’s ambassadors summoned by nations including Iraq, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Morocco in protest of the Quran-burning incident.

Momika received a permit from Swedish police to the country’s free speech laws. Still, later on, officials claimed they had launched an investigation into “agitation against an ethnic group.” After learning that Momika had burned pages from the Koran very close to the mosque.
