According to reports, this directive from the Biden administration came after the US Senate banned the app on federal government devices in December last year.

In this regard, the FBI director said that the Chinese government could use ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, to collect the information of millions of American users.

The Office of Management and Budget calls the guidance released Monday. “An important step in addressing the risks posed by the app to sensitive government data.” Some agencies, including the Department of Defense, Homeland Security and State, already have restrictions. The guidance calls for the rest of the federal government to follow suit within 30 days to ban TikTok.

Congress passed the “No TikTok on Government Devices Act” in December as part of a massive government funding package.

TikTok spokesperson Brooke Oberwetter says on Monday: “TikTok’s ban on federal devices passed without much discussion in December. And unfortunately this approach has served as a blueprint for other governments around the world. Sanctions are little more than political theater.

The legislation allows for the use of TikTok in certain cases, including for national security, law enforcement and research purposes.
