Earthquake hits southern Turkiye and Syria

This Monday early morning a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkiye. This earthquake was felt across Syria, Jordan, and Israel, among other neighboring countries. 

According to the Preliminary information from the U.S. Geological Survey Gaziantep was the origin of this earthquake.

According to USGS, the center of the earthquake was 14.9 miles deep approximately. About ten minutes later a strong 6.7 magnitude temblor rumbled.

At least 284 people were reported to be killed and more than 2,300 injured, In Turkiye. At least 237 people were died and more than 630 were injured in the neighboring county Sriya. This was reported by Syrian state news agency SANA. The deaths were reported in Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartus.

Since 1939, this Monday’s quake is believed to be the strongest to hit Turkiye. Back in 1939 when an earthquake of the same magnitude hit Turkiye it resulted in deaths of over 30,000 people, reported by the USGS. Earthquakes of this magnitude are rare, with fewer than five occurring each year on average, anywhere in the world. Seven quakes with magnitude 7.0 or greater have struck Turkiye in the past 25 years – but Monday’s is the most powerful.
