Emmy Awards 2024: ‘Shōgun’ & ‘The Bear’ take spotlight

Emmy Awards 2024: This year, the small screen’s biggest hits brought us everything from raging Chicago chefs in The Bear to historic Japanese power struggles in Shōgun.

On Wednesday, Emmy-winning actors Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph announced their 2024 Emmy Awards nominations. Academy Chair Chris Abrego also joined in reading the nominations, paying tribute to the year’s best creators.

2024 had something for every TV fan, whether it was the gripping drama of Netflix’s The Crown or Quinta Brunson’s laugh-out-loud moments on Abbott Elementary.

In the end, it was Shogun who led the pack and received the most nominations, earning 25 in total. The Bears followed closely behind with 23, then the only murders in the building with 21.

The ambitious Shogun delighted fans of both the novel and video game series when it was released this year. Set in 1600 Japan, nothing about the show’s energy feels archaic. Critics and audiences alike have praised the production for its freshness, with actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai (both nominated) bringing life to every dramatic scene.

Despite middling reviews from critics, the third season of The Bear still managed to garner several nominations. Star Jeremy Allen White, who has already won an Emmy for his portrayal of frozen chef Carmi, is once again nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Fan favorites Eve Edberry and Ebon Moss-Bachrach also earned accolades.

The Bear’s 23 nominations is a new record for the most nods for a comedy in a single year.

Netflix’s true-story drama Baby Reindeer was easily one of the most talked-about shows of the year and received several nominations to show its popularity. Richard Gade, who plays a version of his past self as he confronts a fanatical stalker, earned a nomination for his candid — and often uncomfortable — performance. Actor Jessica Gunning earned a nod for her charming portrayal of Martha.

The creator of Fallout, Hex, and True Detective: Night Country was also awarded Emmy nominations.
