‘Superstar’ Mahira Khan has said that she will dance on a song as per the script and requirement of any film, but she will never do an ‘item song’.
An ‘item song’ or ‘item number’ is a common term used in Bollywood, meaning any song in a film in which the performing actress or actor has to dance.
An ‘item number or item song’ is added to any film without a script.
Most item songs or item numbers in Pakistani and Indian films feature actresses, in which any actress is made to dance boldly in a short dress with many male dancers.
Mahira Khan has also done songs like ‘Noori’ and ‘More Sayan’ in the past, which were called item numbers.
However, now the actress has made it clear that she feels that ‘item song or item number’ is not for her and she cannot perform in such songs, but she will definitely dance in any song according to the story of the film.
The video clip of Mahira Khan’s interview given to ‘Independent Urdu’ at the beginning of July this month is going viral, in which she is seen explaining about doing ‘item songs and dancing in any song’.
The actress clarified that although she had performed in songs like ‘Noori’ and ‘More Sayan’ in the past, those songs were required for the film.
She said that if she gets a similar offer in the future, she will definitely do it, but she will not do an ‘item song or number’ exclusively.
That is, if she is offered to perform an item song only, she will refuse to do so, but if she is cast in a film as a heroine and will be asked to perform an item according to the script, she will not refuse.
She clarified that as an actress she would do whatever she felt she could, adding that she said, she does not understand the word item song or item number.
